Brazil had previously hosted WED in 1992, on the eve of the first United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), at Rio de Janeiro, 3-14 June 1992 - popularly referred to as the Earth Summit.
This year 20 years later the world's leaders will meet once again in Rio for Rio+20 on 20-22 June 2012.
